UCI celebrates 75th Anniversary of Lyubov Minenko

A few weeks ago, the eminent Ukrainian artist Lyubov Minenko celebrated her 75th birthday (Lyubov means Love in Ukrainian). We extend our warmest congratulations and heartfelt wishes to her for peace, for her and her loved ones' well-being, and for the endless inspiration that breathes life into her art.

To honor this occasion, her home of Kaniv — a city steeped in cultural and historical significance — hosted a vibrant series of events culminating in a jubilee exhibition.

At the celebration, she announced that she has been added to the international list of distinguished artists by the World Academy

of Science, Education, Culture, and Arts (WASECA) in London, United Kingdom—a well-deserved honor for her enduring contributions to culture.

Celebrations also took place in the United States, where Ukrainian Cultural Initiatives paid tribute to Minenko’s work in Boston. A piece from her Bakhmut gouache series was featured during a Ukrainian classical music concert in Lexington, organized by Ukrainian Music Initiative. In a deeply moving moment, the painting was paired with a performance of Bakhmut Rhapsody by composer Olga Zaitzeva-Herz, interpreted by Vira Slywotzky (soprano), Valeriya Sholokhova (cello), and Pavlo Gintov.

The painting served not just as backdrop, but as a visual echo of the music’s emotional resonance.

Indeed, there is a timeless quality in Minenko’s art—her brushstrokes often seem to carry emotional undercurrents borne on the wind. Her paintings, whether joyful or mournful, hopeful or contemplative, resonate far beyond Ukraine. In exhibitions across the United States, her work has touched hearts, offering viewers not just aesthetic pleasure but a deep, human connection.

Mnohaja lita, dear Lyubov!

("Mnohaja lita" is Ukrainian birthday wish to have many healthy happy years)

UCI at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale: Supporting Ukrainian Cultural Resilience

The Ukrainian Cultural Initiative (UCI) is proud to have supported the public programming and opening events of the Ukrainian Pavilion at the 2025 International Venice Architecture Biennale—one of the most prestigious gatherings in the global architecture and art worlds. The Biennale serves as a key arena for cultural diplomacy, attracting influential architects, curators, policymakers, and thought leaders from around the globe. National pavilions offer countries a powerful platform to share their cultural narratives; this year, Ukraine’s Pavilion stood out as a testament to wartime resilience and cultural vitality.

Weeks before the Pavilion’s debut, the curatorial team—comprising Ukrainian, British, and Polish architects and scholars—faced an unexpected budget shortfall. The UCI provided a timely emergency grant, enabling the team to cover critical last-minute expenses and successfully launch the exhibition. The curators expressed deep gratitude for UCI’s pivotal support.

UCI President Vladislav Shapiro and renown journalist and our partner Vladislav Davidzon attended the opening events in Venice, engaging with the curators and key participants across the Biennale. These meetings fostered meaningful relationships with leading Ukrainian cultural figures and emerging architects, including Pavilion co-curators Michał Murawski (King’s College London) and Kateryna Rusetksa (Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture). The UCI delegation also met with Bogdana Kosmina and Oksana Kosmin, creators of an AI project honoring their ethnologist grandmother, and discussed future collaborations with Tetyana Filevska, with Ukrainian political scientist Yulia Yurchenko and Ada Wordsworth, head of reconstruction NGO KHAARP.

The UCI was prominently recognized in the Pavilion’s printed materials and official website, significantly raising its profile among Ukrainian and international cultural professionals. Discussions are underway to co-sponsor upcoming September conferences in Kyiv and Venice, and to adapt elements of the Venice program for American and Ukrainian audiences.

Additionally, UCI engaged with the Ukrainian curators of major reconstruction-focused projects featured in the French Pavilion and Venice’s main Biennale program, including “Circularity on the Edge.” These projects, centered on Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding, represent promising opportunities for collaboration and U.S. public engagement.

Looking ahead, UCI is preparing to sponsor and participate in a major international conference on Ukrainian cultural heritage preservation in September 2025. These efforts underscore UCI’s long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine’s cultural voice on the global stage.

Flag Parade 2024, Lowell Folk Festival

By Anya Dubovyk:

Last Friday (on 26th July) I was incredibly honored to join my dear friends from Ukrainian Cultural Initiative representing Ukraine at Lowell Folk Festival Parade of Flags!

Lowell Folk Festival is one of the largest free folk festivals in the country that has been running for 37 years now!

The flags from around the world fluttered in the breeze, the parade was moving through the downtown Lowell and culminated at the Boarding

House Park stage!

It’s hard to describe how it feels to see people’s reaction on Ukrainian flags at the parade – their support, encouragement and warm wishes were incredible! So many people came to us to say they follow the news and they are with Ukraine!   Yay!

Thank you state Rep. Vanna Howard for introducing Ukraine and other participating countries at the stage!

Thank you Mayor Daniel P. Rourke  and vice mayor Paul Ratha Yem for organizing this amazing event!
